Overview
LumiHealth is a personalized and gamified health program designed by Apple for the Health Promotion Board in Singapore. It’s a national effort for citizens to encourage healthy activity and behaviors through personalized health challenges, gamified narratives, incentives, and Apple Watch.
My Responsibilities
During my time working in LumiHealth, my main role is to develop the future strategy for wellness use cases through gamification. I also redesigned the UIs for activity challenge and wellness use case. I collaborated with cross-functional team to support content, marketing and QA needs.

———————- below is the case study for lumihealth use case evolution ————-———
In this project, I collaborated with a UX Researcher, a Product Designer, a Creative Director, a Producer, a Content Strategist to explore how the future of LumiHealth Use Cases (details below) look like from the product, user, and content perspective in 2 months.
LumiHealth Overview
LumiHealth is a health program partnership between Apple and Singapore government. Our team at Apple were responsible for designing the app that incorporates rewards and gamification elements to support use cases in wellness and clinical areas.

lumihealth 1.0 app walkthrough
The story of LumiHealth begins with our interstellar explorer, Lu. He arrives on Earth for a Cyan Crystal, stolen by a mischievous spirit. Our users can help power Lu to chase the spirit by completing different health challenges. In return, Lu will provide them with coins that can be redeemed for vouchers.
The drawer contains health challenges, including Activity Challenge and Wellness Challenge. Users can close rings on their Apple Watch for Activity Challenge or complete Wellness Challenge through Apple Watch features (Workouts, Breathe, etc.) and in-app check-ins.
The 1.0 app launched in October 2020 and received 200,000 downloads of the app in a year.
what is use case in LUMIHEALTH?
Different health challenges are called Use Case in LumiHealth. Use Cases cover most wellness and clinical topics, such as Physical Activity, Mental Wellbeing, Sleep, etc. They are divided into 3 lanes: Wellness Challenges, Just For You, and Survey.
I collaborated with Content team on visual strategies and production of Use Cases.
How do we evolve use cases in lumihealth?
Based on the launch and feedback for the LumiHealth 1.0 app, the team and I worked on the future product strategy to develop a scalable framework that supports people in discovering and adopting new health habits that measurably improve their health and happiness.
Key findings
We looked into user testing feedback, current user journey, content, and found multiple problems from current Use Case.
design opportunity
We turned 5 problems spaces into three key opportunity areas.
final design strategy
We delivered 5 key design strategies and opportunity areas that paves the road for the future iteration of LumiHealth design.
1. Expand Evergreen Challenges
We had a great success of the activity game on LumiHealth 1.0, so we want to build on it by having other evergreen challenges in different domains (sleep, nutrition, mentalwellbeing, etc).
🎯 No habit adoption support 🎯
By constantly working on same health challenges and tracking results, users go beyond only discovery and start to build their healthy habits.
2. Provide Domain Feedback and Insights
LumiHealth 1.0 focuses mainly on individual actions and users couldn’t see how they did on each category over time. So we want to provide data to users on how their performance are compared to their goals across multiple wellness columns and health insights from historical data.
🎯 No habit adoption support 🎯
By tracking and learning from the performance data and insights, customers will reflect on their historical behaviors and develop them into healthy habits.
3. Editorial discover feed
The randomized content feeds and plain experience on LumiHealth 1.0 couldn’t maintain users’ interests and participation, so we want to create a well-curated discovery feed that includes various types of content to allow users to explore a beautiful catalog of health behaviors and habits based on their data.
🎯 Plain content experience & Random sequencing 🎯
By enriching the feed experience, customers are more likely to find the health behaviors and habits they like and act on it.
4. Integrate story & map into use case
The use cases, map experience and Lu’s narrative of LumiHealth 1.0 are not connected, so we want to connect them closely to create a coherent game-play experience.
🎯 Disconnected content&game 🎯
By combining Lu’s story narratives and game mechanics together with health content, it maintains a coherent game-play experience and increases user engagement.
5. Game Assisted Learning
The use case experience of LumiHealth 1.0 looks more like a static reading experience, so we designed a more interactive and engaging experience to increase content retention, comprehension for habit adoption through gamification.
🎯 Plain content experience & Cheatable Self-report 🎯
By incorporating interactive games and quizzes into Use Case, it increases content engagement, info retention and knowledge comprehension.
Impact to the future product
The strategies we defined eventually leads to the new Program feature launched in Oct, 2021. It is designed to give users a highly personalized program that runs longer for habit adoption. Users will receive a combination of curated health challenges that builds towards the same health goal.
